Rochdale town centre policing operation is working with businesses to tackle retail crime and anti-social behaviour
With the launch of our latest initiative, Operation Tetbury, which sees a team of local neighbourhood officers dedicated to keeping Rochdale town centre safe, we’re doing everything we can to take a firm approach to tackling retail crime and anti-social behaviour.
This involves enhancing community safety on our local high street through both preventative and proactive measures by working closely with Rochdale Council and the local business community to support a safer retail environment for both shop workers and customers.
We conduct both plain clothed and uniform patrols and have built strong resilient links with businesses, giving them the confidence to increase reporting to us.
Officers are also maximising the use of civil powers, like Community Protection Warnings and Criminal Behaviour Orders. These prohibit repeat offenders from entering the town centre or certain shops where they have shoplifted from. We can ensure that crime stays out of the centre, and that employees and businesses feel safe. If they breach the order, they may be subject to arrest.
Inspector Meena Yasin, who is leading Operation Tetbury, said: “We understand the frustrations that businesses have when it comes to shoplifters and just how much it impacts their livelihoods, and I want to reassure those affected that we stand firmly alongside them. Whether you work in a large multinational store or a local shop; we are here for you.
“Working closely with local businesses has enabled us to capture the impact shoplifting and crimes against retail workers have had on the community and secure punitive measures, including a series of criminal behaviour orders (CBOs), restricting offenders from entering a designated area. This has been an effective tool to prevent further crime.”
“If you are a business and are suffering from retail crime, I would urge you to report offences to police so positive action can be taken. Whether you’re the manager of a large multi-national store or owner of a tiny shop – local officers will be able to help and give bespoke crime prevention advice.”
