AS we approach the busiest time of the year, NHS England North West’s Regional Director Louise Shepherd is thanking NHS staff and volunteers across the region working on Christmas Day and over the festive period.
From delivering babies and looking after the most vulnerable, to providing urgent and emergency care, thousands of NHS staff across the North West will be working around the clock to provide care to our patients over the coming few days, when most people spend time with their loved ones.
The NHS is urging people to play their part and use services wisely should they need care. For non-urgent medical advice, people can use 111 online as the first port of call, and they will be directed to the most appropriate service for their needs. GP practices and community pharmacies will be open, but may have different and reduced opening times, so people are urged to check online before attending. And for emergency and life-threatening situations, attend A&E or call 999.
Louise Shepherd, Regional Director for NHS England North West, said: “A heartfelt thank you to all of our NHS staff working over the festive period to ensure our communities receive the care they need.
“This time of year tends to be incredibly busy for the NHS, as we come against a number of challenges and increased demand for services, but I’m always incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication we see from NHS staff and volunteers working across our region and beyond.
“No matter what your plans during the festivities, you can help us by taking extra care and staying safe, but if you do need NHS care, please use the right service for your needs. The NHS is here for you.”
People can also protect themselves and their loved ones from becoming seriously ill with viruses such as flu and COVID-19 by getting the life-saving winter vaccines. As people gather inside during the festivities, viruses are more likely to spread but the vaccines offer the best protection. The public can check if they’re eligible and find a vaccination site on the NHS website.
The NHS is also urging people to look out for vulnerable and older relatives, friends, and neighbours over festive period as many spend this time alone, which can often lead to deterioration of their health and wellbeing, sometimes requiring a hospital admission.
People looking for health advice are urged to use community pharmacies and NHS 111 online You can find your nearest pharmacy here: Find a pharmacy – NHS (www.nhs.uk)
