IMO Charity Launches Targeted Support Groups for Men and Women During Mental Health Awareness Week

As Mental Health Awareness Week highlights the critical importance of mental wellbeing, IMO Charity is proud to announce the launch of its new Sukoon support programme, an initiative designed to break down barriers and provide culturally sensitive mental health support to communities that have traditionally been underserved.
With thanks to the Garfield Weston Foundation for their generous support, the programme reflects IMO Charity’s strong commitment to destigmatising mental health and providing accessible, community-based care.
“Mental health support is not one-size-fits-all”, says Salma Kathrada, Health & Wellbeing Manager at IMO Charity. “Our approach focuses on understanding, cultural sensitivity, and practical, tailored support that meets people where they are”.
A Holistic Approach to Mental Wellbeing
The programme follows the evidence-based Five Ways to Wellbeing framework and offers separate, safe spaces for women and men to build confidence and resilience through activities such as:
• Connecting with others
• Staying physically active
• Practising mindfulness and reflection
• Learning new skills
• Giving back to the community
The women’s programme includes meditation, yoga, creative workshops, and confidence-building sessions, while the men’s programme offers team sports, outdoor challenges, DIY workshops, and emotional wellbeing techniques.
Programme Highlights
• Free 8-week intensive courses
• Multilingual and culturally appropriate support
• Small group sizes to encourage peer support and trust
• Endorsed by a local university for its innovative, community-led approach
Mental Health Awareness Week Call to Action

This Mental Health Awareness Week, IMO Charity invites members of the community to explore a new path to wellbeing. The Sukoon courses run throughout the year, providing individuals with the tools and peer networks to better manage their mental health.
“We are not just delivering a service”, says Ismail Issat, Mental Health Practitioner at IMO Charity. “We are building a safe, supportive community that understands the unique challenges faced by ethnic minority populations”.
Anyone interested in joining the programme is encouraged to register by emailing: support@imocharity.org or call 01254 781310
