Football for free for west Yorkshire’s children

Last Saturday, Penny Appeal and Sky Bet League Two football club, Bradford City maximised their commercial partnership and welcomed 28 young children to their first-ever experience at a football game, which acted part of their wider initiative of serving communities across West Yorkshire.
As ever, entry to football games comes at a price, and with rise of living costs across the United Kingdom, Penny Appeal invited regular attendees at their twice-weekly youth clubs to an access-all-areas pass pitch-side at the University of Bradford Stadium.
Before the game against Grimsby Town at the weekend, in which Bradford City won 3-1, the players were welcomed on the pitch with a guard-of-honour made up of the children, adorning Penny Appeal t-shirts, and Bradford City flags.
In partnership with the club’s community and women’s branches, Penny Appeal and Bradford City launched their ‘City Serve’ campaign last October, where weekly feedings and central hubs for rough sleepers and the homeless were set up across Bradford every Thursday.
As the bleak winter approached, the ‘City Serve’ initiative stretched to the provision of sleeping bags, hand warmers, waterproof bags, and vital thermals, to ensure the protection of rough sleepers throughout the bitterly cold months.
The weekend’s event acted as part of the Penny Appeal’s willingness to look after and serve those on their door-step and to provide for those from low-income communities with an experience like-no-other as the children enjoyed a rare opportunity of not only meeting the players, but also sat amongst the fans during the game.
Speaking pitch-side on Saturday, a marketing representative at Penny Appeal, Liam Mould said: ‘Essentially, we have took the children who attend our youth clubs to a free day out!
‘We thought it would be great to maximise our partnership with Bradford City and invite them to a free game of football – which is there first-ever experience of a football match.
‘They have met the players too, which would normally come at a hefty price nowadays, so it is really nice of the charity and the club to come together to put events like Saturday on.’
‘It’s not just a good day for the children, but also for the staff too, who also don’t get to many football games often too. It’s great because it’s getting these children out of their homes, off the streets and giving their parents a bit of a break too!
‘It is an enriching day for all, and I am proud of the club and the charity’s ability to put events like today on, and hopefully as a partnership we can do more stuff like this!’
